1861 $5 Half Eagle PCGS MS64. Sharp & fresh. Offered here is a near gem survivor of this popular Civil War date, which is much scarcer than the smaller quarter eagle. While usually not considered to be a rare date any coin of this issue graded higher than MS-63 is scarce, and gems are rare. Yet it remains one of the more available No Motto issues of the eagle denomination, and is a popular issue for inclusion in a type set, combined with the ever popular Civil War date.

688,084 pieces were struck of this issue for circulation, but many were melted or mistreated after the war. As such, this is a premium survivor of this issue which is not easily replaced. Full luster, as can be expected for the grade, are seen on both sides. The fields are extremely clean, and at first this appears to be a true gem. A few very minor bagmarks are probably the only point that keeps it out of a gem holder, but they are not prominent. The strike is full, and a light yellow color is noted. In all, this is a great coin for the grade which would fit perfectly in a high-grade type set or set of Civil War coinage.

Coins such as this are also very suitable for inclusion in a varied portfolio for the investor in rare coins. They are not easily replaced, and gold has proved to hold its value for a longer period of time, making higher returns more than likely. Coins such as this half eagle continue to be in demand, and with an event like the sesquicentennial of the American Civil War approaching related coins are destined to rise in value.
