Continental Currency $1.00 and 1787 Fugio 4 Cinq: Set of Two
Colonials
The
numismatic adventure can be enriched by acquiring groups of
coins in meaningful combinations. Sets of coins can run from
two pieces to many. In the areas of rare date and early silver
and gold coins we have established certain sets of special
interest. They include the first and last of an issue, type
sets, design sets, year sets, and those that are joined by
historical events such as the Civil War. The coins of each
set are specially selected for you and your collecting needs.
We are specialists in this
area and will expertly and confidentially help you assemble
a set similar to the one you see below, which is made up of
pieces from the US Rare Coin Investments’ archives.
We will cherry pick through millions of dollars of rare coins
selecting only the finest quality pieces for your collection.
A Set of Two Colonials:
1776 Continental Currency $1.00 and 1787 Fugio 4 Cinq
The Continental Currency
of 1776 and the Fugio Coppers of 1787 are stylistically
related. Both show the sun dial and have the motto MIND
YOUR BUSINESS on the obverse, and both show the motto WE
ARE ONE on the reverse surrounded by a chain of interlocked
circles representing the original colonies.
1776
Continental Currency - The Continental Currency pieces
are the first silver-dollar sized coin proposed for
the United States. The initials E.G. are found on
one of the obverse dies, and it is surmised that Elisha
Gallaudet was the engraver. The chain links of the
reverse was suggested by Benjamin Franklin. In addition
to the designer’s initials on some of the dies,
there are variations in the way CURRENCY is spelled.
The coins were struck in silver, brass, and pewter.
It is further surmised that the pewter pieces were
to serve as dollars, while the brass and silver ones
were patterns.
No denomination is specified on either
side of the Continental dollar, but the diameter is
similar to that of the Spanish Pillar dollar, upon
which the U.S. dollar was eventually based. The designs
are clearly based upon the February 17, 1776 issues
of Continental Congress currency, which uses the same
sundial and linked chains motifs, and the same legends
FUGIO (Latin for "time flies"), MIND YOUR
BUSINESS, AMERICAN CONGRESS, and WE ARE ONE. The names
of the 13 colonies are inscribed, sometimes in abbreviated
form, within individual rings.
1787
Fugio 4 Cinq - Fugio coinage was actually issued
by the authority of the United States. They were the
first official coins of the new republic. The authorizing
law the coin specifies that three hundred tons should
be coined by the contractor at his expense. It also
specifies the design details. They were coined in
New Haven, Connecticut from dies made by Abel Buell
of New Haven.
The design of this Fugio 4 Cinq coin
is similar to the Continental Currency. The obverse
shows the sun dial and the motto below MIND YOU BUSINESS.
The reverse has the thirteen interlocking circles
for each of the original colonies. The motto WE ARE
ONE is in the center circle. The surfaces are glossy
and clean for the grade with no distracting abrasion
marks. The legends are clear as are most of the design
elements.
