1776MO FM Mexico 8R NGC AU55. 1776-MO FM Mexico 8 Reales, KM # 106.2. This choice AU sliver 1776-MO 8 Reales piece is tied for the second finest known at NGC. The coin shows mint luster remaining within its devices. Its surfaces are composed of a mixture of light and dark silver-gray with hints of blue. The colors indicate the coins originality. It is also clean for the grade with no notable abrasion marks or other distractions. The strike is above average with full details on the Kings shoulder, hair, and the crown on the reverse.

The obverse portrays an armored bust of King Charles III of Spain facing right. The legend is CAROLUS III DEI GRATIA or Charles III, by the Grace of God.  The reverse shows a crowned shield flanked by pillars with inscribed banners. The reverse legend is HISPAN ET IND REX, King of Spain and of the Indies. The reverse depicts the arms of Castile and Leon, with Grenada in the base and an escutcheon of Anjou, supported by the Pillars of Hercules. The MO mintmark is for Mexico City.

Charles III was the King of Spain and the Spanish Indies from 1759 to 1788. He was a proponent of enlightened absolutism. As king he tried to rescue the empire from decay through reform including weakening the Church and its monasteries, promoting science and university research, facilitating trade and commerce, modernizing agriculture, and avoiding wars. He never was able to achieve satisfactory control over finances, and he was obliged to borrow to meet expenses. His reforms proved short-lived and Spain relapsed after his death. The rivalry with Britain led Charles to support the American revolutionaries in their War of Independence despite his misgivings about the example it would set for the Spanish colonies. The Spanish military operations in West Florida and on the Mississippi helped the Thirteen Colonies secure their southern and western frontiers from British attack.

In its population report, NGC shows 4 1776-MO 8 reales in AU55 condition with 5 better.
