1850 Double Eagle $20 NGC AU55. The
first year of issue for the largest denomination regularly
struck in the United States until 1933. Introduced
shortly after the gold rush in California started,
the $20 denomination was meant to easily convert California
gold into federal gold coin.
Although not very scarce in overall
terms, this issue, with a mintage of 1,170,261 pieces,
has always been popular as the premier coin in the
double eagle series. Pieces of this issue circulated
widely, with most coins surviving in VF to EF grades.
AU pieces are scarce, especially when choice, and
mint state coins are rare.
The present coin is a slightly circulated
coin, with some small rub on the highest points. Fully
struck, this coin has great detail for an AU coin,
with very pleasing color. Some luster remains in the
protected areas, as can be expected for the grade.
No distracting hits or noticed on either side except
those consistent with the grade.
