1838
Quarter Eagle. The 1838 quarter eagle is slightly more
available than the 1837 issue. Its mintage of 47,030 is slightly
more than that of the previous year. For this year the shape
of the head and the hair were slightly modified, and the stars
were made smaller. Because the quality of the strike improved,
there are more coins of this date in higher grades available.
The finest is an MS68 in the Smithsonian collection. PCGS
has certified 158 pieces, and NGC has 248. Proofs for this
date are unknown.
