1838-C
Quarter Eagle - 1838-C Classic Quarter Eagle. With an
original mintage of 7,880, the 1838-C is the lowest mintage
Classic Head quarter eagle. For the Charlotte Mint, it was
the first year of operations. One die pair was used for this
issue, and it had a doubled mintmark, which was placed on
the coin’s obverse. Many of these coins show waviness
on Liberty’s cheek from some dirt on the die. Mint state
pieces are rarities. At PCGS, 80 have been certified, 6 in
mint state, with the highest being 1 MS64. At NGC, 66 have
been certified, 11 in mint state, with MS63 the highest.
