March 7, 2024

March 7th, 2024 - Philadelphia-Where It All Began

Hello All,

I hope all is well. It's been a very busy year thus far and we think it safe to say this is only the beginning. There is a new drive to reduce ones holdings of box after box of rare coins as we get older and convert these holdings into smaller in quantity but much more value collections. This is a plan that Tom has worked for many years but is finally catching on with many other dealers and collectors not to mention the investor who was never interested in boxes of common coins but instead has focused on rarities and gem quality coins. For example, a client of mine purchased from me an 1834 Capped Bust Quarter Eagle in choice mint state years ago, one of perhaps a dozen known to exist and paid an amount that was considerably less than 100k yet today, years later you will be hard pressed to find one in any grade and if you happen to be fortunate enough to be offered one in choice uncirculated plan on paying a quarter of a million dollars for it and finding considerable competition for this coin.

This is the type of coin you would like to have in your retirement portfolio yes? Tom has been specializing in rarities for several decades and in fact does not even offer to buy things like common St G's and the like unless it's of sufficient quantity to make it worthwhile which it rarely is. But offer Tom a rarer variety early Eagle, Half Eagle, Bust Dollar etc and you will find a very enthusiastic buyer for your coin(s)

This week we turn our focus to coins minted at the Philadelphia Mint with a short run of denominations that will thrill the collector of "P" mint coins as many of these specimens are extremely desirable because of there better than average eye appeal which is something the majority of people are drawn to. While the first coin struck by the mint was actually silver that was melted down from Martha and George Washington's silverware ( reportedly ) producing the USA's first Half Disme, or half dime is not included in this selection, please note that some of the rarities to follow are few and far between to any of us as they are at the head of the class for their respective series of Philadelphia Mint Struck Gold Coins.

This week we present to you a truly excellent run of rarities minted in Philadelphia. Beginning with a Gem 1862 Quarter Dollar, quickly moving into the gold arena starting with a gem uncirculated 1850 Gold Dollar in MS65+, an incredible 1797 Gold Quarter Eagle, a extremely rare 1834 Capped Half Eagle, major rarity in an 1839 Eagle type of 1840, very choice about uncirculated 1855 Eagle NGC 55 CAC, a Proof-like 1877 Eagle, 1st year of the Double Eagle 1850 in choice about uncirculated, way above average 1854 Large Date Double Eagle in AU55 CAC, a super choice 1901 Double Eagle in very choice uncirculated MS63 CAC!
