Ferdinand V & Isabel gold 2 Excelentes ND (1476-1516) Seville, Fr-129, Cayon-2928, XF45 NGC. This historically important gold double Excelente is graded XF45 but could have been several points higher. The portraits are well struck and the overall gold "look" is that of a piece of treasure several hundred years old. There is a slight scratch through Fernandos hair, which probably keeps the coin from an AU grade. The reverse legends are sharply struck and again the overall patina and "color" of this coin is lovely and original. The Doble Excelente was struck in Sevilla. The obverse shows crowned busts of Fernando and Isabel facing each other. They were the king and queen who financed Christopher Columbus journeys to the Western Hemisphere!
A cross with four pellets is above the portraits. The S is shown with three pellets between them at the neckline. There is a single pellet between the two monarchs at the profile. The reverse shows crowned arms of Castile and Aragon. The eagle of St. John is behind the shield. An overall wonderful and historically important gold coin depicting the investors and monarchs who financed the way for the America's to be discovered. 27 x 26.5mm, 7.0 grams.
