1752 Germany 1/4D (1752 Germany 1/4 Ducat) HESSE CASSEL FR-1281, KM# 452, NGC MS62. This quarter ducat from Hesse Cassel, Germany, has lively mint luster on its surfaces and shows not a trace of wear, as expected for a mint state coin. The strike is full on the central devices, especially the lions body on the obverse and the monogram on the reverse.

The coins obverse shows a lion rearing upon its hind legs with its forelegs extended, the right up higher than the left. The lion is crowned, and the date is to its right and left. The denomination, written as is below a domed double line. The reverse shows a fancy WL monogram, which is also crowned.

Animals are important symbols in heraldry. Approximately one-third of all arms used an animal. Of all the animals used, the lion is the most popular in every region, time period, and social class. It is found on fifteen percent of European coats of arms.
William VIII ruled Hesse Cassel, also called Hesse-Kassel, from 1730 until his death in 1760. Hesse Cassel was a state in the Holy Roman Empire. William ruled as regent from 1730 to 1751 and as landgrave from 1751 to 1760. A landgrave was a title of a count used in the Holy Roman Empire. The count had feudal duty directly to the emperor. His jurisdiction often stretched over a large territory. By definition he exercised sovereign rights comparable to duke. His jurisdiction was called a landgraviate, and his wife was a landgravine. William became landgrave after his brother died on March 25, 1751.

In 1756, William joined forces with Prussia and Britain in the Seven Years War. France occupied Hesse Cassel several times because it was of strategic importance during the war. During his reign William collected paintings including works by Rembrandt. He also started building the Palace at Wilhelmsthal. William was succeeded by his son, Frederick II, who was the landgrave that sold Hessian mercenaries to the British to help suppress the American Revolution.
