1792 Washington Born Virginia 1c NGC VF25 BN. This post-colonial Washington cent is uniformly chocolate brown with strong obverse details and clean surfaces for the grade. The obverse strike shows full details on the central portrait with strong lettering and dentils on the right side. The reverse was made from a caved in die, which produced central bulges.
The coin originated in Birmingham, England. The lack of a denomination may suggest that they were meant to be struck in silver and were struck as patterns. Several silver pieces are known. They may have been made as medals as well. In any case, they were rejected by British token collectors and sent to America where, although not legal tender, they circulated as cents because of the shortage of federal coinage.

Washington rejected these pieces on two grounds. He was opposed to having his portrait or any living person portrayed on a coin, and he was opposed to contract coinage. He felt that the United States could produce its own coins for circulation.

Designed by Hancock at Westwoods mint, the obverse shows a bust of Washington in profile facing left in uniform. The obverse inscription is GEO. WASHINGTON BORN VIRGINIA FEB. 11,1732. The inscription below a small star at the top of the reverse is GENERAL OF THE AMERICAN ARMIES 1775 RESIGNED 1783 PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES 1789. It is interesting to note that Washington was actually born on February 22, 1732.
