1795 Half Eagle - 1795 Early $5 Small Eagle NGC AU50. In its population report, NGC shows 10 1795 Small Eagle half eagles certified at the AU50 grade level. They do not distinguish early half eagles by die variety.

What are the attributes of a Small Eagle half eagle that you would want for your collection? Are they good color and toning, even wear, clean surfaces, centered devices, and a reasonable strike? If thats the case, this coin is for you because in addition to those qualities it is a real looker. The coin is a 1795 Small Eagle half eagle that NGC has certified in Almost Uncirculated 50.

It has clearly original, yellow and greenish-gold surfaces with a hint of light toning at the right periphery on both sides, which adds to its appeal. There is sufficient separation between the strands of Libertys hair and cap as well as within the drapery to warrant the grade. Taking stock of another important aspect of the grade, the surfaces are clean with no abrasion marks that require individual description. Adding to the desirability of this excellent specimen, the devices are well centered and bold. Libertys hair details, the eagles remaining breast feathers, and the dentils on both sides are all strong. It is a coin that meets all the requirements to belong in a fine numismatic collection.

The BD-3 variety is identified by the wide date. Star 11 joins the Y in LIBERTY as well as Star 12. The tip of the 5 in the date is barely over the drapery. Star 1 is below and touches the curl. On the reverse, the upper leaf ends at the foot of the I in UNITED and the lower leaf touches the right bottom of the left foot of the N and extends past the center of the N. There are 4 berries, two on each side both inside and out.
