1795 Washington Liberty & Security Penny PCGS AU55 BN CAC. This colonial half penny has clean surfaces and, despite the BN or brown designation, some mint red peeking through on the reverse. The coin is graded AU55, indicating that design is virtually intact, and it is confirmed by CAC, which assures that this is a premium quality piece. The coin is well struck. All of the details including the braid on Washingtons shoulder are visible.
Even though Washington rejected the idea, Birmingham token makers in England still hoped for a contract using a presidential image. When Kempson & Sons of London heard that the Philadelphia mint was having difficulty and might close, they began making halfpence and pence for export. Several examples were sent and some circulated as cents.
The present coin shows Washington facing right with his name in an arc above. The reverse has a shield upon which an eagle is perched holding arrows and an olive branch. The inscription LIBERTY AND SECURITY surrounds, and the date is below written as 17 95 separated by the point of the shield. The edge says BIRMINGHAM REDRUTH AND SWANSEA and is ornamented with symbols for heavenly bodies.
In its population report as of April 2011, CAC has confirmed in AU55 the present coin and 1 better.
