In very recent history an MS-67 CAC 1796 Dime brought $881,000.00+ at auction. This is a Great early American coin. Around the same time that coin was being sold, we had an MS-66 specimen of the 1796 Draped Bust Dime on our website which we thought was a good price at $135,000.00. This coin was spotted and purchased by The American Independence Collection, a pedigreed collection of early American rarities. Here is a glorious example of the 1796 Dime graded by PCGS as MS-63 for what we think is a great buy on a top grade early bust dime of any kind, especially a 1796.....do you remember who was President then?
Folks, high grade earlies, especially the ones with dates in the 1790s are all rare and are all experiencing a growing awareness of how neat and historic these coins are and how they've done thru the ages in terms of investment which is very good. I have specialized in the earlies for more than 2 decades and I can tell you that the amount of collectors, investors and dealers in this material has grown by several fold and as we continue to see this almost evolution of growth in the world of numismatics a portion of that growth will natually find its way into the earlies. Early US coins of all denominations from an investment point of view have always, always been among the most stable growers in price.
Decade after decade early type has really blossomed and were seeing more specialists that ever wanting to own a dime that Jefferson might have had, or a dollar that Washington may have bought a round while discussing tactics. That spells more growth for the future. Whether you are considering these coins as a collector, as an investor for profits, to set aside as a legacy to a grandchild or young person, the early coins which are foundational as well in the historic aspects of our country, also make one of the futures most important investments as well.

1796 Draped Bust Dime PCGS MS63. The Coinage Act of 1792 authorized the mintage of a "disme" however production would be delayed until 1796. As Chief Engraver of the newly authorized United States Mint, Robert Scot embarked on a mission to create our countrys first Dimes. Many believe he transferred a sketch of William Ann Bingham, a prominent Philadelphia socialite, created by well known portrait artist Gilbert Stuart, onto the obverse dies of our first regular issue dime.
The obverse displays a portrait of Liberty facing right with long flowing hair, surrounded by 15 stars representing 15 States. The reverse displays a Bald Eagle facing right, perched on swirling clouds, surrounded by palm and olive branches with berries fastened together with a bow.
With a limited production of only 22,135 reported for circulation, few numismatist will have the opportunity to study these wonderful federal issues in person. There are six known varieties (different die pairings) all of which are scarce.
Simply amazing best describes this 1796 Draped Bust Dime, graded Mint State 63 by the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS). Remarkably well preserved details of the obverse are accented by gentle shades of crimson and lavender.
