1798R Brazil 6400R - 1798-R Brazil 6400R, KM # 226.1, NGC MS61. This Mint State 1789-R 6400 reis coin from Brazil has subdued mint luster within protected areas on both sides of the coin. It is tied for the third finest known at NGC. The surfaces are a mixture of light and dark yellow gold with the lighter shades predominating. The colors indicate that the surfaces are original. They are also clean for the grade with no notable abrasion marks or other distractions. The coin was struck from misaligned dies causing its obverse to be slightly off center. It is well struck with full details on Marias hair, her headdress, and the arms on the reverse.
Struck at the Rio de Janeiro Mint, the coin portrays Maria I, ruler of Portugal and its colony, Brazil. She faces right in profile with her hair in a bejeweled headdress. The inscription reads MARIA I DG PORT ET ALG REGINA, with the date below. The mintmark is to the right of the date. The reverse shows the crowned arms of Portugal.
Like many European gold and silver coins, the 6400 reis gold piece circulated in colonial and post-Revolutionary America. It was granted legal tender status by the Second Continental Congress and circulated until 1857 when all foreign coins were demonetized.
In its population report, NGC shows 2 Brazil 1798-R 6400 reis coins in MS61 condition with 7 better.
