1800 Eagle NGC MS61 - 1800 $10 NGC MS61. (BD-1, R-3+) With approximately two to three hundred 1800 eagles known in all grades, this issue is scarce in circulated condition. In upper AU and uncirculated, however, this is a very rare coin that is seldom offered in as appealing and original condition as seen on this coin, which has been certified by NGC in an older holder.

All $10 gold pieces of this year were struck from a single die pair, which according to most sources struck a total of 5,999 eagles through out the year. However, recent research by Bass-Dannreuther has revealed that this figure did not include all 1800 eagles that came from the Mint. It was common practice at the Mint to combine various dies for a long time, sometimes even after being useable for production. As such, often dies were dated differently than the year they were struck. Because of this, their estimate is as high as 12,500 pieces, with some being struck in 1801. In his Encyclopedia, Breen considered this issue to be very rare in UNC, although some pieces have turned up in recent years. However, in as choice condition as featured here it is far from easily found or frequently offered

Over two hundred years old, this large gold coin has remained in excellent quality for over two centuries. Although some hits are seen, a common feature on these soft gold coins, the fields are of premium quality. Further to that, there is frosty luster seen on both sides, which show not a single luster break as can be expected for an uncirculated coin. The strike is supreme, being very sharp, showing virtually full detail on both sides. This is a rare occurrence on these coins, which are often weakly struck on the highest points, especially so in the centers.

This coin is the perfect coin for the conscious type set collector seeking a premium quality example of this very scarce type. Although other dates are more available with intensive searching, there wont be many coins around that will offer the quality seen here.
