Gilbert Stuart was commissioned to design the Draped Bust Dollar in an attempt to advance United States coinage to world class stature. Stuart is best known for the unfinished portrait of George Washington that is sometimes referred to as The Athenaeum, which was begun in 1796 and left incomplete at the time of Stuart's death in 1828. The image of George Washington featured in the painting has appeared on the United States one-dollar bill for over a century.

Over the six years that the Draped Bust Heraldic Eagle dollars were minted, over 1.1 million coins were produced, all at the Philadelphia mint. Dollar production stopped after 1804 as silver dollars had began to be pulled from circulation due to their high intrinsic value. It wasnt until Mint director, R.M. Patterson, ordered engraver Christian Gobrecht to prepare a new pair of dies for a new dollar coin, the Gobrecht Dollar, which was struck from 1836-1839.
