1806 50c (1806 Half Dollar) Early Half Dollar, PCGS AU55. Pointed 6, Stem Through Claw. Shades of tan and brown and excellent surfaces characterize this 1806 Draped Bust Half Dollar. The piece is the Pointed 6 variety with the olive branch stem through the eagles left claw. The coin is light and dark tan with shades of brown, green, and blue. The toning is darker at the periphery and lighter towards the centers. There is a trace of wear on the highest points: the hair above the forehead and the drapery on Libertys bust and shoulder. The strike is above average with slight central weakness on both sides. A prominent die crack is seen below the date and through the stars to the left.
The Draped Bust half dollar was designed by Robert Scot, who used a drawing by Gilbert Stuart of Mrs. William Bingham. It shows Liberty with her hair tied with a ribbon. The word LIBERTY is above and the date is below. Seven stars are to the left and six to the right. A modified heraldic eagle was used for the reverse. It had mixed up heraldry with the arrows and olive branch in the wrong talons. In the field above the eagle are thirteen stars and above them, an arc of clouds. A banner from wing to wing has the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. None of the early silver coins have a denomination, except for edge lettering, because silver was valued by its weight and fineness as was the European coinage of the time.
