1807 $5 (1807 Half Eagle) Bust Right, ANACS EF40. This rare early date 1807 Half Eagle has well struck centers and an unusual die break that extends from the rim to and through the top of the E in LIBERTY. The coin is net graded EF40 but shows the striking and sharpness details for a high AU grade. Both Libertys hair details and the lines of the shield are clear and sharp. The dentils on the left side of the obverse and the right side of the reverse are sharp.

Robert Scot designed the half eagle. It shows a round-faced Liberty in profile, facing right. She wears a large, loose cap. Her hair flows up over the cap creating a turban-like impression. Because of this lock of hair, the design is sometimes called a Turban Head. Thirteen stars, seven right and six left are on each side with the date below the truncation. The reverse is a modification of the Great Seal of the United States of America. It shows a heraldic eagle with a shield on its breast. Fourteen stars are in a cross arrangement above its head. Above the stars is a group of clouds arranged in an arc. Across the eagles neck is a banner inscribed E PLURIBUS UNUM. Arrows are in its right talon and an olive branch is in its left. The required inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA surrounds the eagle. Dentils are on both sides of the coin.

This year was the last year for the Capped Bust to Right type half eagle. While mintages are similar to several of the prior years, the 1807 is rarer and harder to find. While ANACS does not publish population reports, and the other grading services do not publish details grading numbers, both NGC and PCGS have 321 Bust Right half eagle coins of this date certified in all grades making it rare in all conditions. These numbers do not account for crossovers or resubmissions.
