1809/8 Half Eagle $5 NGC MS6, BD-1, R-3+. Certified by NGC in a new holder, this is the only variety for the 1809 half eagle, with an estimated 250-325 pieces known to exist in all grades. All known examples were struck from an overdated obverse die (from a leftover 1808 dated obverse) and a reverse which was previously used to strike 1808 dated half eagles. However, the overdate status of the obverse die has been disputed by various numismatic scholars, and perhaps is correctly classified as only a repunched digit. Despite of this, most modern references continue to list this variety as an overdate, because of its numismatic tradition.

Within the Capped Bust Half Eagle series (designed by John Reich and produced between 1807 and 1812) the 1809/8 has the lowest mintage of all issues and the lowest survival rate as well. Its mintage is usually quoted at 33,875 pieces, but given the number of specimens that have survived it is very well possible that the mintage was lower. For most people, however, the most important factor is the number of survivors in all grades, and for the present coin, that number is low, even within the context of the series.

No doubt, in original uncirculated condition, this coin is even scarcer. Five Dollars was a relatively large amount in the early 19th century, and most pieces were later melted for its gold content, or when saved, abused by collectors. As such, the number of uncirculated pieces which have survived without problems is very low, and finding an example such as the present usually requires multiple years of searching. As such, for collectors of early American gold coins or coins designed by John Reich this is an important opportunity, and as such we expect it to move fast.

Fully impressed on both sides, with only moderate abrasions visible on both sides, the present coin has excellent eye-appeal for the grade. Dark and appealing green-gold coloration on both sides confirms the originality of this half eagle. Fresh and vibrant luster is visible, especially so on the reverse. No individual marks are extremely distracting, and this coin, certified by NGC in a new holder appears to be a fine example for the grade. With every increasing demand for quality early American gold coins, we expect this coin to please the advanced collector, as well as the conscious investor seeking a varied portfolio of rare gold coins.
