1817/8SO FJ CHILE 8E NGC MS63. 1817/8 So FJ, Chile, 8 Escudos, (KM # 78). This lovely eight escudos gold coin glistens with bright mint luster. A couple of small marks in the obverse field keep this coin from a higher mint state grade. Except for the top of the rim on both sides, the coin is fully struck. The coin was struck during the reign of Ferdinand VII; however it shows the bust of Charles IV with Ferdinands name.
This combination is particularly odd since Charles bust was not used when he was actually king. Two overdates are recorded, 1817/6, and the present coin, 1817/8. The obverse inscription is FERDIN.VII.D.G.HISP.ET IND.R. with the date, 1818/8, below. The reverse shows the crowned shield with the inscription IN.UTROQ.FELIX.AUSPICE.DEO. and the mintmark So. F.J. for the Santiago Mint. The recorded mintage was 11,000.
In its population report NGC shows a total of 12 coins in all grades.
Specifications: 27.07 g, .875 fine gold, .761 troy oz AGW. 38.10 mm diameter.
