1833 10c (1833 Dime) Last 3 High, ANACS AU55. JR-5. This Capped Bust 1833 Dime, while graded AU55 by ANACS, has virtually no wear and certainly could have been given a grade of 58. Both the hair above the eye and the front of the drapery show lines of separation sufficient for the higher grade. The obverse, which is slightly darker than the reverse, has much darker toning at the beads of the rim and most of the stars on the right. On the reverse, the shield and lower rim have the most toning. While strike is superb and shows every design detail on both sides, subdued mint luster is also seen in protected areas.
The Capped Bust dime was designed by John Reich and modified by William Kneass. Kneass introduced a close collar which imparted a reeded edge when the coin was struck. The previous press used an open collar. Since the planchets were not confined, they varied in diameter. One consequence of using the new equipment was that smaller dentils or beads were on the border.
In 1833 there were three varieties. One had a high 1 in the date. A second had the date on a straight line, and the third, the present coin, had a high last 3 in the date.
