1833 Dime - 1833 10c Last 3 High PCGS G06. Early Dime. This circulated 1833 Capped Bust Dime has light gray devices that contrast with darker toned fields. The bust of Liberty is well outlined with some hair detail showing. All of the letters in LIBERTY are clear as are the date and stars. The legends on the reverse are incomplete, which keeps the coin from a VG grade.
Designed by John Reich, the Capped Bust dime shows Liberty in profile facing left wearing a Phrygian cap with LIBERTY inscribed on the headband. Ringlets of hair protrude from her cap at the forehead and ear, and her curls fall to the shoulders. A clasp just off the shoulder holds the drapery, and the date is below the truncation. Seven stars are to her left and six are to the right. The reverse shows the heraldic eagle looking left with wings raised. Above the eagle, on a banner, is the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. The required inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA surrounds the coin, and the denomination written as 10 C. is below.
Dimes of 1828 to 1837 were struck with a close collar. Because the collars cylindrical wall is grooved, it imparted a reeded edge at the time of striking. Since the reeding did not have to be done as a separate operation with a Castaing machine, the minting process was greatly speeded up.
