1833 $2.5 Quarter Eagle NGC MS63, (BD-1, R-5) NGC MS63 The 1833 is the scarcest issue of this type behind the 1834 with motto. Examples are scarce in all grade, and it has been estimated that of the mintage of 4,160 coins just 60 to 80 survive in all grades. Of these, the majority have circulated, but a few remain in uncirculated condition, such as the present coin. Many of this issue were melted during the next year, when the weight of gold coins was altered and the gold denomination slowly appeared in circulation, at least for a while. All were struck from a single die pair, which featured a reverse die which had already been introduced in 1830, and struck the majority of coins of the full type.

Because of the rarity of all issues, this type is extremely difficult to acquire in high grade for a type set. Usually, a type set collector would choose to include one of the common dates to represent that specific type. In some cases, such as with this type, it might pay off to acquire one of the scarcer dates. Here we have a type which total number of specimens known numbers just a few hundred pieces. All are thus rare, seldom offered at auction, with great interest when one does appear in the public market.

Because of its rarity and lack of auction appearances, even such a scarce coin would be a prime example for a type set. As a sidenote, it could also be the start of a specialized (mint state) set of early quarter eagles from 1829 to 1834, although the latter would be an extremely difficult set. Circulation of these coins was extremely limited to virtually non-existent, and most of the surviving pieces are in high about uncirculated to lower mint state. The challenge is to find a piece with good eye-appeal, which has not been dipped or cleaned, at a reasonable price.

Here we have such a coin. Featuring extremely clean fields and strong luster, this coin is a pleasure to look at. No deep marks, often encountered on these soft gold coins are seen, along with no further distractions. The color is a slightly darker yellow, with light and fresh highlights on the devices. In all, this is a great coin of this rare type and date, and an important offering of this rare issue.
