1834 Half Eagle (1834 $5) Classic, NGC MS62. First year of issue for the classic head type, and the first of this denomination that is somewhat easily acquired in circulated grades. However, examples remain hard to find in original condition, and mint state examples are more difficult to find. Many have prooflike fields, as seen here, and it perfectly adds to the new design that was introduced in 1834 and struck only during that same decade. This date comes in two different varieties, identified by the numeral 4 in the date. The present is that of the more frequently encountered plain 4, which has no crosslet to the right. The crosslet 4 variety, obviously, does have that feature and is much more difficult to find.
The present example has excellent eye-appeal, and would fit perfectly in an uncirculated date or type set. The fields are, as previously mentioned, moderately prooflike and very pleasing, especially the obverse. Some minor marks are noted for accuracy, and are probably the reason why this coin did not receive a higher grade from the grading company. The strike is strong and sharp, with no weak spots noted anywhere on the design. Moderately darker gold color is seen on both sides and is another addition to the eye-appeal of this coin. One of 657,460 half eagles struck this year (combined over the two varieties), the highest until 1843.
