1834 Half Eagle $5 NGC MS61. 1834 $5, Classic Head, Crosslet 4. With less than an estimated 10% of all 1834 Classic Head, Crosslet 4 half eagles surviving in Mint State, the present offering represents an important opportunity for the specialist or advanced type set collector. The 1834 Classic Head half eagle had a total mintage of 657,460 coins, divided over two different varieties, identified by the shape of the 4 in the date. The present, so-called Crosslet 4 is approximately 10 times as rare as the Plain 4 variety, which is already scarce in uncirculated condition. The first of all gold coins which is not extremely rare, this type and date is much underrated, as vast circulation has resulted in a very limited number of uncirculated coins. As such, even an uncirculated coin which has been certified at a somewhat lower numerical grade is very important, and this offering is not easily repeated.

While not an immensely popular series to collect by date, type set collectors will most likely settle for an example of the 1834 classic head half eagle, to illustrate this type. No doubt, the inclusion of a plain 4 example will appear to be the most logical option, but an uncirculated example will certainly add extra value to such a collection. More and more people are collecting gold coins by major variety, such as the present, which is listed in all major references as an important variety. This increased demand has already led to rising prices. With more people realizing the relatively safe and profitable investing in 19th century gold coins, we expect prices to rise much faster during the decade, compared to the previous decades.

As previously mentioned, this variety is very rare in uncirculated condition, and this is an exceptionally fine example at this grade level. Certified by NGC in a new holder, this coin is highlighted by a sharp strike, pleasing subdued luster, and relatively mark-free surfaces. None of the blemishes are large enough to be individually mentioned, and overall the eye-appeal is strong, complimented by a nice and appealing yellow golden coloration. For the specialist of gold coinage, advanced type set collectors, or conscious investors we expect this coin to fit perfectly in a high-end and advanced collection.
