1834 Half Eagle (1834 $5) Plain 4 NGC AU58. This lustrous 1834 half eagle shows slight abrasion in the fields and a few marks on Libertys face. There is a bit of wear on the highest points of the obverse, which keep it from an uncirculated grade. The strike is strong on the reverse, less so on the obverse. Half eagles of 1834 to 1838 are called Classic Heads.
They were designed by William Keneass and are similar to the design that was used on Large Cents of 1808 to 1814. The band that is inscribed LIBERTY replaces the cap on Libertys head. The denomination was continued as 5 D. The motto E PLURIBUS UNUM was removed from the coin.
The original mintage of this coin was 657,460, which included both varieties, the plain 4 (the present coin) and the crosslet 4.
