1834 Classic Quarter Eagle (1834 $2.50 Classic) NGC AU55. 1834 $2.50 Classic Head. In 1834 the United States was a young and growing nation of 24 states with a population of just under 13 million citizens. Andrew Jackson was entering his second term as President and America was edging toward war with Mexico.
The Coinage Act of 1834 was enacted and called for the reduction in size and purity of gold coins due to the rise in gold prices which had caused circulating gold coins to be worth more than their face value. The result saw the introduction mid-year of the Classic Head design on a reduced size quarter eagle.
This first year issue has long been popular with collectors as a type piece. The splendid example offered here is lustrous and flashy. Well struck and boldly defined, only very light and even wear is present. Beautiful honey gold and orange peel tones give it fantastic eye appeal. For the type collector seeking a single specimen or the investor seeking rare early United States gold coins, this piece makes the perfect choice.
