1835 50C (1835 Half Dollar) ANACS VF30. Early Half Dollar. Although details graded, this Capped Bust 1835 Half Dollar is an example of the Curved Top to 5 variety. The coin shows mixed light and dark shading on the devices which stand out from the fields. There is dark toning around the peripheries of both sides. For the grade, the surfaces are clean and free of distractions.
Designed by John Reich, the Capped Bust, Lettered Edge half dollars were minted from 1807 to 1836 except for 1816. The 1815 coins were delivered in January of 1816, hours before a fire ruined the rolling mills in one out buildings, making conversion of bullion impossible until late the next year, when repairs were made.
The obverse design was criticized for portraying Reichs fat mistress and for having an overly buxom Liberty wearing a liberty cap. The heraldic eagle corrected the error of the previous issue that had the arrows and olive branch in the wrong talons.
