1836 Quarter Eagle (1836 $2.50) Block 8, NGC AU55. 1836 $2.50 Classic Head. February 23-March 6, 1836 will always be remembered as a poignant time in Americas history. Against overwhelming opposition, a small band of freedom fighters estimated at less than 200 resisted an oppressors army of over 3,000 for 13 days before ultimately succumbing to the far superior military force. Remember the Alamo would become a famous rallying cry that would propel Texas to freedom as an independent Republic prior to becoming a State in the Union.
The 1836 quarter eagle is found in 2 types. The Script 8 and Block 8 resulted from the usage of two different date punches. No hard records are known but experts concur that the Block 8 variety, as offered here, is approximately four times scarcer than its Script 8 counterpart.
This Block 8 example is a terrific and well struck gold piece. The golden honey surfaces are clear and lustrous providing charming eye appeal. For the type collector looking for a superb single example or the gold investor seeking quality early rare gold, this historic quarter eagle is a fine selection.
