1836 Quarter Eagle (1836 $2.50) Script 8, NGC AU58. This 1836 quarter eagle exhibits overall even gold color on both sides. There is some mint luster in Libertys hair and on the eagles feathers on the reverse. There is a small amount of wear on the high points of the obverse with less on the reverse, which is consistent with the AU 58 grade. The strike is weak above Libertys ear, as expected for the date, and somewhat stronger on the reverse. There is an obverse die break from star six to the base of the L in LIBERTY and through the hair. This coin is the Script 8 variety.
In 1836 over 500,000 quarter eagles were minted; consequently, they are common in ordinary grades. However, any Reich-Kneass Classic Head gold quarter eagle in mint or almost mint state is a rarity. Few were saved as souvenirs. Most of them were immediately put to use, and have all of the problems associated with circulated coins.
