1837 Quarter Eagle (1837 $2.50) NGC AU58. This 1837 quarter eagle is honey-gold with bright luster gleaming from the protected areas of the obverse. On the reverse, the eagles feathers are especially lustrous. The coin is virtually free of marks on the obverse and has a couple of miniscule tick marks in the reverse field. It shows a tiny bit of wear on its highest points, consistent with the almost mint state grade.
The strike shows the usual central weakness for this date above Libertys ear and on the vertical lines in the shield. This coin was struck with rotated dies, an error which NGC neglected to mention on its holder. The 1837 quarter eagle is one of two dates that are considered transitional. The other is the 1836. They are similar to the Large Cent transitional heads of the same years. The 1837 quarter eagle is considered very scarce because most of the 45,080 coins that were indicated in the mintage report were actually dated the prior year.
The Classic Heads of 1834 to 1839 continued the practice of abbreviating the denomination as 2 and D that appeared on the previously issued Capped Heads. However, the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, which was on the Capped Heads had been eliminated.
