1837 Quarter Eagle (1837 $2.50) NGC AU58. Much original mint luster remains in the devices of this scarce 1837 Quarter Eagle. Some very light wear and a few scattered tiny ticks keep this coin from a mint state grade. The strike shows the usual weakness above Libertys ear on the obverse while the reverse strike is above average. The main device on the obverse is a head of Liberty in profile with her hair bound with a ribbon inscribed LIBERTY. Her hair falls in curls towards the back. Thirteen six-pointed stars encircle her with the date below the truncation. Near the rim are dentils on both sides of the coin. The principal device on the reverse is a heraldic eagle facing left. It holds an olive branch in its right talon and arrows in the left. The inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is above, interrupted by the wing tips, and the denomination, written as 2 D. is below.
In its population report NGC shows 227 coins certified in all grades. AU58 is in the upper third of the group.
