1840-C Quarter Eagle (1840-C $2.50) NGC AU55. 1840-C $2.50 Liberty Head. Pre-Civil War gold coins produced at the southern branch mint in Charlotte, North Carolina are always extremely popular with collectors. The Charlotte Mint struck gold coins from 1838-1861 when it ceased operations and was transformed by Confederate forces into a hospital, never to mint coins again. The 1840-C issue is quite scarce and represents the first year that the Liberty Head design was struck in Charlotte and as such it is always very popular with collectors.
The example offered here is choice and well struck for the issue. Modest and even wear is spread across the highest points of the well defined devices amidst golden wheat and amber fields. Luster is still present, especially in the protected areas about the devices and the eye appeal is above average.
This is a gorgeous and historic rare southern branch mint quarter eagle that will pass the scrutiny of the most demanding collector/investor and fit nicely into a high quality numismatic portfolio.
