1843-C Quarter Eagle (1843-C $2.50) Large Date NGC MS61. This branch mint 1843-C quarter eagle is gold on both sides. There is mint luster on Libertys head, the date, the stars, and most of the rim. On the reverse, the top portion of the eagle, the legend, denomination, and the dentils are lustrous. There are a couple of minor ticks on the obverse field and virtually none on the reverse. The strike is full on both sides with all the details of all the devices visible.
Because counterfeiting was a problem of the time, except for the addition of the dates and mint marks, the new quarter eagles were hubbed in their entirety. Thus, variations were possible only in these two elements. From 1840 to 1843, the dates on all of the quarter eagles were small. In 1843 they were changed to a larger size. There were also two punches used for the number 4, a crosslet and a plain. The present coin is a large date, plain 4, large C variety. This Charlotte quarter eagle is very rare in grades above XF.
In its population report, NGC shows 9 with 7 better.
