1843-O $10 Republic (1843-O Eagle Republic) NGC AU53. Ex-SS Republic (blue tag). This premium quality, Southern branch mint, shipwrecked 1843-O Gold Eagle, smolders with mint luster. The coin has very light abrasion and a trace of wear on its highest points, in keeping with the grade.

The scuff marks at the top of the obverse are on the holder not the coin. The strike is bold on the reverse but shows central weakness on the obverse. The coin was designed by Christian Gobrecht, who used a coronet motif for his liberty head and a heraldic eagle for his reverse. Gobrecht corrected the design mistake made by Scot on the prior heraldic coins. Scot had the positions of the arrows and olive branch reversed.

The coin has been encapsulated with NGCs special label, which has been used only for coins from the S.S. Republic. It is one of 27 coins of this date and mint certified by NGC and recovered from the shipwreck.
