1846-D Quarter Eagle (1846-D $2.5) NGC MS62. Fully original Dahlonega gold coins, of any denomination or date are rare. Most examples that have survived from this historic Mint are well circulated, and those that did survive in uncirculated condition, usually have been dipped or cleaned. Only the most distinct minority of Dahlonega gold coins, such as the present, will still feature their original coloration. This is usually given as green-gold, slightly darker yellow gold, and the present is a perfect representation of this seldom-seen characteristic.
With a mintage of 19,303 coins this is a scarce issue which falls in the mid-range of all Dahlonega quarter eagles. However, this is only true for circulated pieces, as uncirculated pieces are very rare. It is estimated that in all uncirculated grades less than approximately half a dozen examples exist, perhaps a few more, but not more than ten pieces. Population reports, by both PCGS and NGC appear to have been heavily influenced by resubmissions, and auction appearances will be a much better indication as to the rarity of this issue in the higher grades.
For the specialist of Southern gold coinage the present offering represents an extraordinary opportunity, and one that is not easily repeated, especially not a coin which is this original. Premiums for high grade gold coins with fully uncirculated surfaces are still relatively low, and this represents a good opportunity for the conscious investor as well. These very rare gold coins have seen a growing collector interest, and prices tend to stay stable in all economic climates and conditions.
As previously mentioned and certainly not exaggerated, the present coin is fully uncirculated, original and has excellent eye-appeal. A few marks on either side account for the grade, but none of the individual marks are distracting, thus we think it is not necessary to mention them individually. A keen eye will notice some striking weakness in the centers, but this is a genuine characteristic of this date. All other features are well-impressed, and it certainly compliments to the overall eye-appeal. A great coin and one that is destined to move fast into a collection, where it will no doubt be one of the most original pieces encountered.
In its population report, NGC shows 4 in MS62 with 3 better.
