1846-O Eagle (1846-O $10) NGC AU53. Hints of mint luster peek out from within the devices of this Southern branch mint 1846-O Eagle. The coin shows light abrasion and scattered marks on the obverse and a small scrape in the upper right field on the reverse. There is a faint trace of wear on top of the coronet and on the hair above the ear, in keeping with the grade. The strike is average on the obverse with slight weakness seen on stars and central portions of the design. The reverse strike is much stronger with all of the details readily apparent.
The 1846 eagle is a Type 1 for this design. The motto IN GOD WE TRUST was added in 1866 creating Type 2. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the coin shows a profile of Liberty facing left, wearing a LIBERTY inscribed coronet. Her hair is tied with beads as two curls flow down her neck. She is surrounded by thirteen six-pointed stars with the date below. The reverse shows a modified heraldic eagle with the required inscription and the denomination written as TEN D. below. The previous eagles mistaken heraldry is corrected with this design. The mintmark is between the E and N below the juncture of olive branch and arrows.
