1846 Quarter Eagle (1846 $2.50) NGC AU58 CAC. This bright and lustrous 1846 Quarter Eagle shimmers with radiance. A few marks on Libertys cheek and in the reverse upper field as well as a trace of wear on the highest points keep it from a mint state grade. The grade of AU58 is confirmed by CAC meaning that it is graded accurately. The coin is well struck on both sides with all the details in evidence.
The coin is an excellent example of Gobrechts Coronet Head design which began in 1840. It shows Liberty facing left wearing a LIBERTY inscribed coronet with her hair tied in beads. She is surrounded by thirteen six-pointed stars. The date is below the truncation. Dentils are around the rim on both sides. The reverse shows the heraldic eagle facing left. In its claws are arrows of war and the olive branch of peace. Above is the required inscription, interrupted by the wing tips, and the denomination is below written as 2 D. The reverse is similar to the reverse on the previously issued quarter eagle type of 1834.
The original mintage of this coin is 21,598. In its population report NGC shows a total of 122 coins is all grades.
