1847-C $5 (1847-C Half Eagle) NGC VF30 CAC. This Southern branch mint 1847-C Half Eagle shows even wear on all of the high points of the coin, in keeping with the grade and confirmed by CAC. There is a full LIBERTY with all the letters plain. The hair down the neck is worn but the major details are visible. For the grade, the surfaces are in good condition and show few distracting marks or nicks. Clash marks are seen in the reverse field above the eagles neck, and the top of the 7 touches the truncation.

Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the coin shows a portrait of Liberty in profile facing left. Her hair is tied with beads as two curls flow down her neck. She wears a LIBERTY inscribed coronet and is surrounded by thirteen six-pointed stars. The date is below the truncation. At the periphery on both sides of the coin are dentils. The reverse shows a heraldic eagle facing left. It holds an olive branch, symbol of peace, in its right talon and arrows, symbolic of preparedness, in its left. The coin is inscribed UNITED STATE OF AMERICA, interrupted by the wing tips with the denomination written as FIVE D. below. Between the juncture of the arrows and olive branch and the denomination is the C mintmark for the Charlotte Mint.

In the 1790s gold was accidentally discovered in North Carolina. The first United States Gold Rush took place in the early 1800s in North Carolina and Georgia. In the area around Charlotte, North Carolina almost 100 gold mines were in operation. The most gold produced in the United States came from North Carolina until 1848, when it was discovered in California.

The 1847-C half eagle had an original mintage of 84,151. NGC has certified 270 coins of this date in all grades. CAC has verified 1 in VF30 with 8 better.
