1847-C Half Eagle (1847-C $5) PCGS AU50. Shimmering luster peaks out from the devices of this branch mint 1847-C Half Eagle. It is lightly abraded and shows a few scattered contact marks. There is even wear on the high points, which is consistent with the grade. The strike is above average for the date. The top right of the 7 in the date touches the truncation of the bust. Christian Gobrecht designed the Coronet or Braided Hair half eagle, which were minted from 1839 to 1908. He used a coronet design, similar to the Large Cents of 1816 to 1857.
On the obverse, Liberty is seen facing left, wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY. The date is centered below the truncation. Liberty is surrounded by thirteen stars. In addition to changing the obverse, Gobrecht also changed the denomination on the reverse. Instead of 5 D. on the previous style eagle, the coin now had FIVE D. for the denomination.
Charlotte gold is rare in all conditions and eagerly collected by those who are aware of its scarcity. The original mintage of the 1847-C half eagle was 84,151. In its population report PCGS shows only 174 certified in all grades.
As of March 2011, CAC has verified 1 in AU50 with 4 better.
