1847 Eagle (1847 $10) SS Republic, NGC AU55. Mint luster fills the devices of this shipwrecked 1847 eagle. The obverse shows numerous abrasion marks and wear on the high points, consistent with the grade. The marks are somewhat less on the reverse and are restricted to the field. In 1865 following the Civil War, the treasure ship S.S. Republic sank in a hurricane off the coast of Savannah.

In 2003 the Odyssey Republic Expedition, after twelve years of searching, discovered and began the recovery of the ships treasure. The cargo of had lain for 138 years approximately 100 miles off the coast of Georgia. The S.S. Republics cargo contained many different types of gold coins including double eagles, eagles, such as the present coin, and half eagles. The blue NGC tag was used exclusively for coins from the Republic.
