1848-O $10 Gold Eagle NGC AU50. 1848-O $10. A scarce issue in AU and rare to extremely rare in higher grades, the 1848-O eagle is a typical issue from the New Orleans Mint. Many coins of this year circulated intensively in the decade preceding the Civil War, and undamaged coins in any grade are scarce. Furthermore, the coins that did survive in these grades are often extensively bagmarked, and lack sufficient eye-appeal. The coin offered here, while not completely mark-free is relatively free of this, and still has excellent eye-appeal.
This issue had a total mintage of 35,850 coins, and while it is not the lowest mintage of the type it is not the highest either. This coin is a good survivor, with no mentionable distractions. A lighter yellow color is seen on both sides, with luster remaining in the protected areas. From the overall look of the coin it appears to have been moderately prooflike at the time of striking. While that factor is not much visible any more, it remains a fine survivor and an affordable issue of this scarce Ten dollar gold piece.
