1848-O Eagle (1848-O $10) NGC AU50. This branch mint eagle has bright luster on Libertys hair and profile on the obverse and similar luster on the tops of the eagles wings, head, arrows and olive branch on the reverse. There are a few minor contact marks on Libertys cheek and neck, and a few on the reverse field. There is a small amount of wear on the high points of both sides, consistent with the grade. The strike is weak in the center as is often seen for this date. This eagle is an example of Christian Gobrechts Coronet Design, No Motto, which was minted from 1838 to 1866.
The Coronet design replaced Robert Scotts Turban Head with a completely new design. Liberty faces left wearing a coronet instead of a cap. Her hair is tie back in a bun with two large curls coming down her neck and side. Gobrecht corrected the Scotts mistaken heraldry by reversing the positions of the arrows and olive branch in the eagles claws. The coins original mintage was 35,850.
