1848 Quarter Eagle (1848 $2.50) NGC MS62. 1848 marked the year the gold was discovered in California. As a result, mintages of gold coinage would soon increase, and this is the last issue that was not largely influenced by gold coming from the California mines.
Although the CAL quarter eagles of this year are considered to be rare and are always in demand, the regular quarter eagle is an often over-looked coin. Only 7,497 pieces were produced throughout the year, although most likely before the first California gold reached Philadelphia. Most of these immediately went into circulation, making AU and Mint State pieces scarce to rare.
Of this small mintage, this is a wonderful uncirculated example. Very lustrous, there are no luster breaks that are frequently encountered on these coins. The present coin exhibits original color, with orange-yellow highlights. This is a truly uncirculated coin that was saved from circulation. One of the true sleepers in the series and an issue that is destined to rise in value
