1849-C Half Eagle (1849-C $5) PCGS XF45. Some mint luster still adheres within the devices of this branch mint 1849-C Half Eagle. There is surface abrasion in keeping with the grade as well as a small scratch above Libertys head and one between star ten and the rim. Even wear is found on the coins high points as well.
The strike is strong on the reverse but shows some central weakness on the obverse. The coin was struck from rotated dies, an error not noted on the PCGS holder. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the half eagles of 1849 are the Type 1s. In addition to changing the head of Liberty from the Classic design to the Coronet Head, he changed the denomination used by Kneass of 5 D. to FIVE D.
All Charlotte and Dahlonega gold is rare in any condition and eagerly sought by collectors. In its population report PCGS shows 173 for this date and mint mark in all grades.
