1849 Eagle (1849 $10) NGC AU55 CAC. 1849 $10 Liberty Head, No Mott. On January 24, 1848 gold was discovered at Captain John A. Sutters mill and the course of American history would be forever altered. The great California Gold Rush was on. Tens of thousands of prospectors and fortune hunters from around the globe flocked to the West. By the summer of 1849, the gold from the California hills was flowing to the East and being made into coins issued by the U.S. Mint. This newly created wealth would fuel the western expansion of the United States.
The specimen offered here is particularly choice and original and seemingly conservatively graded. The well struck devices reflect just faint wear on the very highest points and the green gold surfaces are quite clear and absent of major distractions or impairments. CAC has reviewed and approved this coin, one of only 6 eagles from this date so certified to date.
While the 1849 eagle is not an extremely rare coin, Gold Rush coins of this year are always in demand and held in high esteem by collectors and historians alike. As a result, locating an original and especially choice example from this date is no easy task. Therefore, the eagle offered here warrants special attention and will certainly please the avid collector/investor.
