1850-D One Dollar Gold (1850-D G$1) NGC AU53. Bright mint luster outlines the devices of this branch mint 1850-D One Dollar Gold. Light abrasion and wear are seen on both sides of the coin, in keeping with the grade. Central weakness is seen on both sides, particularly the obverse which lacks much hair detail above the ear. Some stars show extra outlines. These result from extra blows from the hub to make the working die and are not considered Mint errors. Clash marks and die breaks are also seen especially on the reverse. James B. Longacre designed the small size Type 1 gold dollar.
It shows a portrait of Liberty in profile facing left encircled with thirteen six-pointed stars. She wears a LIBERTY inscribed coronet, and her hair is tied in the back. Several loose curls flow down her neck. Dentils are near the edge on both sides of the coin. The reverse shows an open wreath tied at the bottom with a bow. At the top of the wreath is a large numeral one, the denomination. Below it is the word DOLLAR with the date below. The inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is in an arc above the wreath and the mintmark is below the knot of the bow.
