1850-O Liberty Head, (Type 1) Gold Dollar NGC MS61. Over the past several years New Orleans Mint gold coins have begun to receive the respect they deserve in relation to their siblings produced in Dahlonega and Charlotte. These long underrated issues are becoming more noted for their true rarity and in turn increased demand has found the supply of many dates to be extremely limited. This is the case with the 1850 New Orleans Gold Dollar. This piece has the lowest mintage of any gold dollar produced at New Orleans with just 14,000 pieces struck. Of that number it is estimated that perhaps as few as 200 examples have survived to this day. The example offered here is very well struck and absent of significant abrasions or distractions. Abundant luster remains intact and the surfaces have a pleasing and wholesome eye appeal. Vey faint marks can be seen with magnification indicating a potential wipe many years ago. Overall this is a lovely and scarce pre-Civil War gold dollar produced during the height of the California Gold Rush that is certain to please the specialist or serve as a wonderful type piece in a fine numismatic collection.
