1851-O $10 Republic (1851-O Republic Eagle) NGC AU55. Ex-SS Republic (blue tag). Muted mint luster glistens from within the devices of this shipwrecked, Southern branch mint 1851-O Gold Eagle. The coin has clean surfaces and just a touch of wear on the high points. The AU55 grade is confirmed with the CAC sticker.

The reverse shows a hollow ring on top of the second stripe in the shield, no doubt the remnants of a center punch on the die. The obverse is weakly struck, which is characteristic for this date and branch; however, the reverse strike is strong.

In 2003 the Odyssey Marine group salvaged 51,000 coins from the wreck of the S.S. Republic, which sank in 1865 off the coast of Savannah, Georgia. The ship carried in face value $400,000 in gold and silver.
