1851-O Quarter Eagle (1851-O $2.50) NGC AU58. The 1851-O Quarter Eagle is one of the more easily collectible quarter eagles from the New Orleans Mint. 141,000 pieces were struck during the year, of which an approximate 200-250 remain in all grades. Most of these pieces however, survive only after having spent considerable time in circulation, making upper AU coins very scarce.

Most of these coins were struck from freshly deposited gold coming from the California gold mines. As a result, mintages of gold coins drastically increased, making most issues of the 1850s scarce at most.

The present coin is an early die state of the common variety of the year, showing strong repunching on the digits of the date. Although the center of the reverse is slightly weak, common with New Orleans quarter eagles only some very small luster breaks keep this coin out of a mint-state holder.
